WEBVTT

00:00.000 --> 00:12.320
Okay. Good afternoon everybody. I'm glad to see you all here. Also welcome to everybody

00:12.320 --> 00:19.280
who's joining online. My name is Analize and I'm a teacher at a free University of Amsterdam

00:19.280 --> 00:29.560
and I'm also working for Haiti and Haiti is a textual programming for kids. Now, to

00:29.560 --> 00:35.520
know I can talk a lot about Haiti in all kinds of different stuff and there's a lot to

00:35.520 --> 00:41.400
talk about but I don't want to know what you want to know about Haiti. So let's first

00:41.400 --> 00:51.600
of all check who's familiar with Haiti. That's almost half. Yeah, that's great. Well, who

00:51.600 --> 01:03.320
if you know who's the founder of Haiti? Yeah, there's a small hand. Yeah, you almost pronounce

01:03.320 --> 01:11.160
it correct indeed. So the founder of Haiti is Felina Hermons and she created Haiti just

01:11.160 --> 01:21.160
because she needed it because she wanted to teach children a textual programming language.

01:21.160 --> 01:30.400
So who if you want to know more about why Haiti is created or are you more want to know

01:30.400 --> 01:37.040
how you can contribute to Haiti? So what we're really looking for contributors. Are you more

01:37.040 --> 01:45.800
about the history or more about into contributing? Who's for history? Okay, and who's for

01:45.840 --> 01:54.760
contributing? Okay, okay, so that's also half half. Well, let's let's get started.

01:54.760 --> 02:02.280
So for contributing, I will talk about the discord and the get-up. Guess you're most familiar

02:02.280 --> 02:08.720
with it. And for the history, I'm going to talk about the gradual part of Haiti, the multilingual

02:08.800 --> 02:18.000
part of Haiti and the classroom with Haiti. So Felina, she's a computer science, so she thought

02:18.000 --> 02:26.480
I can teach children how to do textual programming. And she came up with Python because first

02:26.480 --> 02:32.480
she said like I am let's do scratch and then the children they were like 12 year old, 13 year old

02:32.720 --> 02:40.240
like scratch, we're already over scratch, we know that we want something grown up, you know,

02:40.240 --> 02:46.480
not all these colored blocks. So she said well let's do Python then because yeah Python is

02:46.480 --> 02:51.920
it's a big language, it's a good language, I know Python so I can teach you Python. And there

02:51.920 --> 02:59.040
there was a problem because all these children and she had children who really wanted to know coding.

02:59.120 --> 03:04.080
There were not just a regular clause, it was really a coding clause so they wanted to know it

03:04.080 --> 03:10.640
and still they struggled a lot. They had a lot of errors and they got demotivated about it.

03:11.280 --> 03:17.440
So she was like well if you want to learn Python and you want to learn coding and you really

03:17.440 --> 03:25.200
into it and you get a lot of errors and then still you feel demotivated, why is that? So how can we

03:25.280 --> 03:30.720
change that? How can we change our educational system so that there are less demotivations?

03:32.000 --> 03:40.800
And she dove into the world of how we teach children a language to write because Python is a

03:40.800 --> 03:48.000
language we call it a language but it's a language for the computer but you also learn languages

03:48.080 --> 03:55.120
to write and then she found out that when you learn a language you do it step by step.

03:56.960 --> 04:04.880
First you have your letters your ABCs then you combine them to words and with these words you make

04:04.880 --> 04:11.840
small sentences. Maybe they're not full when you're about six, seven years old but you create

04:12.000 --> 04:18.240
small sentences and then when they move on when they grow up we tell them you need to use

04:18.240 --> 04:26.240
capital and a full stop at the end and some commerce in between. So we really take it step by step and

04:26.240 --> 04:33.680
then they have to write their whole proposals with a title and paragraphs. You don't do that

04:33.680 --> 04:42.320
render six years old. You don't go from ABCs to a whole big proposal. So she thought maybe

04:42.320 --> 04:48.400
we can do the same for learning a textural programming language since it's also a language.

04:51.840 --> 04:58.320
So she wanted to do something with Python and moving on gradual onto Python.

04:59.280 --> 05:06.960
Now here's the first example. So when you go in Python you want to print the whole world

05:06.960 --> 05:15.840
hello onto your screen. You need to use the keyword print. You have this bracket then you have

05:16.880 --> 05:24.160
quotations then you do the words then another quotation and then another bracket. So here there's

05:24.240 --> 05:31.200
a lot of mistakes to do. First of all, these children there were 12 years old. They learned

05:31.200 --> 05:37.200
that they need to use a capital at the beginning of a sentence. But when you write a capital P with

05:37.200 --> 05:43.360
print it's wrong immediately in error but but you thought you do it right because you learn to

05:43.360 --> 05:49.920
capital and then you do it wrong. Then these brackets there's no space in between these brackets.

05:50.000 --> 05:54.320
When you do a space wrong, when you do the wrong bracket we have square brackets, we have

05:54.320 --> 06:02.640
curly brackets, wrong brackets, wrong. When you have quotations, if you miss quotations, it's wrong.

06:02.640 --> 06:08.480
So with a simple statement like this print statement, you can make so many mistakes.

06:09.440 --> 06:15.280
And when you make many mistakes, it's harder to find this motivation that get somewhere

06:15.360 --> 06:19.840
deep inside to want to learn it. But it's hard to get it because there are so many errors.

06:21.200 --> 06:29.840
So in Haiti we start simple. So first you have print space hello just to print hello.

06:30.560 --> 06:38.000
And then in the level further when you when you notice keyword prints, then we add quotations.

06:38.000 --> 06:45.200
And first we add single quotations. Because single quotations is much familiar to students.

06:45.840 --> 06:50.560
So it's less taking less space up in your brain to know what you want, what you need to do.

06:51.760 --> 06:57.280
And then third one at the end, then we add these brackets. Because then you're already familiar

06:57.280 --> 07:04.560
with these quotations and then we add brackets. Another example is the for loop.

07:05.440 --> 07:12.000
Or with the for loop, you also have these columns, you have these four spaces.

07:12.000 --> 07:18.480
Say your indentation. So there's much, even much more things you can do wrong when you want to do a for loop.

07:19.920 --> 07:26.800
So in Haiti we start a for loop just at one line. No indentations just one line.

07:26.800 --> 07:34.000
And for e in range 10, that's really hard to grasp for a child to know what it's really doing.

07:34.000 --> 07:41.920
So we start with the keyword repeat repeat 10 times and then you do something what you want to repeat.

07:42.560 --> 07:50.640
And then in further levels, we go to indentations. So then you know that you need to use for spaces.

07:50.640 --> 07:59.360
And then say what you want to do. And gradually we expand it until we move on to this for e in range 10.

08:05.200 --> 08:08.800
Are there any questions about the gradual aspects of Haiti?

08:09.600 --> 08:11.600
Yes, please.

08:21.600 --> 08:30.400
So your question is when a kid asked like what is correct? Because there are different things I showed you how to do it.

08:30.640 --> 08:36.720
And so in Haiti we have 18 levels and in each level something else is correct.

08:36.720 --> 08:43.920
But it's not 18 times something different of course. So in let's say the first five levels you don't

08:43.920 --> 08:49.920
use quotations. And then from level five to level, then you need to use these quotations.

08:50.480 --> 09:00.160
And for some things, Haiti is it doesn't matter if you lose single quotations or double quotations.

09:00.560 --> 09:07.440
In the end, what we type in Haiti will be translated and then put into Python.

09:07.440 --> 09:13.200
So Python also can handle single and double quotations if you match them correctly of course.

09:14.400 --> 09:18.400
So there it doesn't matter and then the challenge will see it doesn't matter.

09:19.440 --> 09:22.080
Does this answer future?

09:22.480 --> 09:31.440
And so when they move from quotes to quotes from parentheses, how do they conceptualize that?

09:32.160 --> 09:36.880
Do they understand that it's gradual? Do you want to be something easier version and now I'm moving to the

09:36.880 --> 09:41.120
part of version and that's the version I'm going to use now on or how do you explain that there?

09:41.760 --> 09:50.400
Yeah, so Haiti is really based on that a teacher takes his children in these 18 levels and you have to

09:50.400 --> 09:57.120
explain them that hey, first we do it a little bit easier because then you can learn it better

09:57.120 --> 10:04.560
and then we will change it so we can do different things also. And we move on to this grown-up Python language.

10:05.440 --> 10:11.920
But of course with every change you make, the students do have a struggle like, oh yeah,

10:11.920 --> 10:19.040
oh no, now it's not correct anymore. But it's a small change and it's not all these things that

10:19.120 --> 10:22.240
can go wrong. It's only, oh yeah, I forgot these parentheses.

10:26.880 --> 10:36.320
So when Feline tested her Haiti in the classroom, she used these keywords like

10:36.320 --> 10:43.600
brains and repeats and then there were children who said like, well, that's cool, I know English,

10:44.480 --> 10:52.400
but why can't this just be in Dutch? I like that a bit more just Dutch just know English and

10:52.400 --> 11:03.600
Feline said well, yeah, why can't I, so she did it. She localized Haiti and there was really

11:03.600 --> 11:12.400
cool because most of the children in Dutch, they do know English so it shouldn't be that hard

11:13.920 --> 11:22.160
but you also have languages that don't use the letter and alphabet. And then when you want to

11:22.160 --> 11:32.080
teach a child that you need to use this P or I and T and they don't know these these letters that

11:32.080 --> 11:38.240
well and they don't find them on their keyboards on the computer then you must understand that

11:38.240 --> 11:45.920
it's much bigger struggle to learn coding. So you have a disadvantage, much more than in the language

11:45.920 --> 11:56.560
where you notice these letters already. So Heidi is multilingual and all these languages that we have

11:56.560 --> 12:04.240
in Haiti, they're all made by contributors who help us out with these translations and I've got

12:04.480 --> 12:15.280
an example here for our keyword repeat which is in many different languages. Now let's do a challenge

12:15.280 --> 12:20.160
and raise your hands if you see your favorite language.

12:34.320 --> 12:47.120
Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's sometimes I'm not seeing a hand raised is there some language missing?

12:50.240 --> 13:02.320
No, no language missing, oh that's great. If you go to the Haiti website

13:02.400 --> 13:10.960
you can just click on the button to get your language and as I said before the languages are

13:10.960 --> 13:17.120
really done by contributors. So if you see something where the translation is a bit off please

13:17.120 --> 13:29.600
help us out with a good translation. Now when Fulina created Haiti it turned out that it's not

13:29.680 --> 13:37.280
only that she needed this but there are a lot of other teachers who saw like hey they didn't know

13:37.280 --> 13:43.200
of course beforehand but they saw that they needed it too. They saw that they could use it in their

13:43.200 --> 13:50.480
classroom for the students who are now out of scratch who want to do something else all over the

13:50.480 --> 13:57.840
world. So now Haiti is really a platform that you can use in a teacher based setting.

13:58.800 --> 14:06.320
Haiti is a platform for in the classroom. So as a teacher you can create classes, you can manage

14:06.320 --> 14:15.360
all your students. So let's have a look at how it what we do have. So at our website, Haiti.org

14:17.520 --> 14:27.600
you will end up at this home page and when you click on the left top on Haiti then you

14:27.600 --> 14:39.120
go to the language platform. Now we have a lot of levels so in the left top you see level two

14:39.120 --> 14:43.680
there's a drop down menu where you can select a different level. All these steps

14:44.720 --> 14:53.040
steps are different exercises where you can learn these keywords and try to use them in different

14:53.040 --> 15:03.920
contexts. So here we have an ask and I'm not sure if it's can you read the code right.

15:06.960 --> 15:15.920
Okay well so we have a variable which is choice and you have an ask that you can choose a rock

15:16.000 --> 15:22.640
paper or scissors and then in the second line you print the choice that you choose.

15:24.400 --> 15:32.640
So let's choose scissors we can also use emojis and let and words and letters and then we will

15:32.640 --> 15:41.840
print iTunes scissors. We also have the turtle which is always nice because then you really see

15:41.840 --> 15:49.840
your output of your code so children really like it and then this is the place for teachers so

15:49.840 --> 15:59.280
you can create a class you can have multiple students within your class. You can make your own assignments

15:59.280 --> 16:04.960
so really what you want to do within the class you can calculate to project your doing

16:05.200 --> 16:15.600
and for the teachers to give some presentations for the students to really get this

16:15.600 --> 16:21.040
explanation of what are we doing what does a keyword do we have some slides available.

16:25.040 --> 16:33.520
Now so this is the educational part and the history part of Haiti. Are there any questions about

16:33.520 --> 16:38.560
this part? Yes please.

16:51.440 --> 17:01.840
So the question is how do you use the languages and Haiti so Haiti is a full web browser based.

17:01.920 --> 17:07.920
So you can do it within the web browser. There's only only need a computer and internet to do Haiti.

17:11.440 --> 17:14.880
Any other questions? Yes please.

17:14.880 --> 17:44.720
Is there a question correctly that if there's a lot of things available in Python what

17:44.720 --> 17:52.720
is available in Haiti which things are you learning in Haiti? Yes so variables, conditions,

17:52.720 --> 18:02.640
if statements and functions. So we don't do classes. Is that answering your question?

18:02.640 --> 18:13.920
Okay. Any other questions? Okay let's use the last couple of minutes for contributions

18:15.360 --> 18:22.560
so because Haiti is multilingual we really like contributions on the language on the translations

18:24.880 --> 18:36.400
but there's also a whole world behind Haiti to get it working properly and sometimes we have

18:37.360 --> 18:46.800
a box and there's a small development team so we have a flina. We have kisses in Venezuela

18:46.800 --> 18:53.280
who is helping us out. We have Buriana in I think she's in Bulgaria who helps us out.

18:54.640 --> 19:01.200
I'm working for Haiti and Marlene who's in the Netherlands is also working for Haiti within the

19:01.840 --> 19:09.680
content but that's a small team who's only working a couple of days one or two days per week for Haiti.

19:11.520 --> 19:21.360
If you want to help us out I want to show you what we're currently working on so this is

19:22.000 --> 19:32.000
what I just showed you how it's looking and we want to go to a more calmer appearance of Haiti

19:33.200 --> 19:44.240
and we already have some basics and that looks like this but to go to this calmer appearance of Haiti

19:44.320 --> 19:53.600
and especially on the teacher for teacher website we really want to go more teacher based with Haiti

19:53.600 --> 20:03.440
we do need to develop more of the appearance of Haiti. If you want to get in touch with us

20:04.400 --> 20:15.040
we are on GitHub and we're on Discord the best way to really get in conversation with us is to

20:15.040 --> 20:23.040
Discord that's where we always are and GitHub is a bit maybe that's with a lot of repositories

20:23.040 --> 20:27.680
big and huge and we're struggling to really get to all the issues.

20:28.000 --> 20:38.720
So on Discord if you want to join us I've got here a QR code which is just on the line of

20:38.720 --> 20:49.280
this screen so I don't think you can get it but you will also find this on the gates of page

20:50.080 --> 20:57.360
there's a question programming general question if you put something up here I will probably see it

20:57.360 --> 21:08.720
because I'm every day I'm looking through here on GitHub we have a Wikipedia page

21:09.760 --> 21:15.440
Feline really wrote it down well how it's structured and I'm not really into it so I

21:15.440 --> 21:21.680
I can't give you all the details but we do have a heavy page the heavy development process

21:21.760 --> 21:30.480
Wikipedia we really can see how it's in the in the back and if you're interested in translations

21:30.480 --> 21:36.720
we do this through web late if you're familiar with it so here's a tutorial on how to

21:36.720 --> 21:48.720
translations how you how you can do that very easily. So that's for the contributors part if you

21:49.040 --> 21:57.440
have any small questions I will be around and happily to answer them if you have other questions

21:58.880 --> 22:07.200
I'm very happy to know what you want to know. So that's a good question

22:07.200 --> 22:21.200
I know it's called after a woman who is called Haiti, Haiti Lama but I always forget like who she was

22:22.160 --> 22:29.040
she was an actress but also a little more she had a software engineering and I think it looked

22:29.040 --> 22:36.480
back in 60 years. Yeah it's quite a long time ago so Haiti Lama and an actress and something

22:36.480 --> 22:42.240
in software development. Will you check it out her name and what she did?

22:44.080 --> 22:49.440
Yeah great. We only use their word because it used to be a white line.

22:50.160 --> 22:58.240
Ah did you hear that? So what she did the work of Haiti Lama it's used in wifi so

22:58.240 --> 23:07.200
every time you use wifi you use Haiti. But if you have wifi you go to Haiti or or

23:08.000 --> 23:18.640
and then we have this all together. Okay well if you have other questions and you don't want to

23:18.640 --> 23:23.520
come to me or you can't find me you can always send me an email on the list at Haiti.org

23:24.880 --> 23:27.520
and I thank you all for coming here and it's neat to the stop.

23:34.720 --> 23:45.600
So if you want to check Haiti out and we will be around at four I think in that room or here.

23:48.960 --> 23:57.120
Oh yeah it's down the hallway. Oh tree there will be a good workshop at four o'clock.

23:58.240 --> 24:02.240
Do we see you there? Yes. Yes. Good.
